Nintendo 3D Display Game System Virtual Boy VUE-S-RA(JPN)

In 1995 Nintendo let gamers in Japan make first contact with Virtual Reality. The Atari Jaguar version Jaguar VR was unveiled during the CES Winter 1995 but never hit the market. The Virtual Boy of Nintendo didn’t need a console to work as it was a tabletop video game console. The Virtual Boy is till today (2023) the worst selling Nintendo console as it only sold around 770.000 units. To put this in perspective, the WiiU sold 13.6 million units and is also considered to be a mistake by Nintendo.

In the 1990s there was not much known of the effect of LED screens nearby the eyes and some were afraid it burned into the gamers eyes.
